  • Rise and Fall of the National Industrial Recovery Act

The National Industrial Recovery Act of 1933 (NIRA or NRA) was the centerpiece of the early New Deal legislation. It organized industries into quasi-cartels and included codes of conduct regarding marketing, pricing, and labor standards. The codes included minimum wages and a general right to collective bargaining. There was initially much support for the NRA but as this video shows, the support began to fade. In 1935, the Supreme Court declared the Act to be unconstitutional. In the Court's view, NRA overstepped the traditional view that Congress could regulate only interstate commerce (such as railroads that crossed state lines). This view was later overturned by a Supreme Court decision in 1937 upholding the Wagner Act which regulated collective bargaining in more detail than NRA....

  • Iran Marks National Industry & Mines Day

A rhetorical speech by Iran's President Hassan Rouhani; addressing some of the top elites of Iran's industry and mines sector; this year the ceremony to mark the national Industry and Mine day was an opportunity for both the government and producers to pour their hearts out over the current stagflation in Iran's industry sector. According to some experts, excessive liquidity, remaining debts to banks and penalty interests, lack of enough government support for private industries and finance shortages are a part of the problems facing the industry sector in Iran. Iran's industry mines and trade minister Mohammadreza Nematzadeh says that diminishing a soaring point to point inflation of %43 down to %14 percent and employing active foreign diplomacy with the six world powers to reduce sanctio...

Mullingar has become a venue for such exhibitions and shows relating to manufacturing with its successful Industrial Expo event. Industry 4.0 At European level, manufacturing leaders have grouped under one broad heading the most significant developments in IT and communications technology which hold clear benefits for production – that heading has come to be known as Industry 4.0. Put simply, this concept refers to the fact that developments have been so world-changing from a manufacturing perspective that it amounts to a whole revolution in manufacturing techniques; effectively the 4th recognisable Industrial Revolution. Developments in technologies such as Additive manufacturing (3D printing), augmented reality, automated data systems, virtual reality, cobotics, big data analytics and so on. The event would not have been possible without the generous sponsorship and support of Westmeath County Council, Enterprise Ireland, IDA Ireland, Mason Hays Curran and Cisco Meraki. Three hundred and fifty people were in attendance for the Summit which certainly had the quality of speaker that would be expected from a National Summit event. A consistent buzz was evident for the full day of the event which was Mullingar's answer to the Web Summit. Many references were made also the the new Additive Manufacturing Research Lab which is being located in Mullingar in Lough Sheever Business Park.

Indonesian/Nat An Indonesian company has taken a small step towards the creation of a national car industry - by launching the first ever locally assembled automobile. But the Timor Putra company - which is led by Tommy Suharto, the son of the country's President - still has some way to go. Less than 20 percent of the new model is assembled in Indonesia and the company has failed in a bid to win a loan of 1 point 3 billion (US) dollars. The new car that rolled up the red carpet to be received by company executives was only partially assembled in Indonesia - a fact that had grim implications for the accountants. In order to receive certain tax exemptions the car must be 20 per cent locally put together by the end of this year. And this car did not hit that target. The national car program has been controversial from the start. Japan, the U-S and Europe have all at various times threatened action through the W-T-O to keep Timor from getting an unfair market advantage. And inside Indonesia it's also facing criticism because its Chief Executive is the son of the President - and many allege that nepotism is behind the advantages that Tommy Suharto' s company has received. President Suharto ordered loans of 1-point-3 (b) billion U-S dollars, but Tommy says he will only get six hundred and ninety million, because of moves at the W-T-O. SOUNDBITE: (Bahasa Indonesia) "Of course, if they withdrew it is not because they do not want to finance this project, but because of pressure from their government." SUPER CAPTION: Tommy Suharto, Director, Timor Putra A government official says that the whole 1-point-3 (b) billion U-S dollars was not needed and sales are slow. Now the company is counting on revenues to makeup the difference. It had expected to sell 4-thousand a month - but that figure has yet to be achieved. Even so - the prospect of a rise in future sales is still being held out by the company's C-E-O. SOUNDBITE: (Bahasa Indonesia) "I think that is the very best way. At least they do not need to invest much more money. They can use the facilities of Timor." SUPER CAPTION: Tommy Suharto, Director, Timor Putra A merger with Maleo, which is run by BJ Habibbie, the research and technology minister, could be a political marriage. Habibbie is seen as a possible successor to vice president Try Sutrisno, and eventually to Suharto. But the question is, will Maleo want to be joined by as yet unproven Timor motors. While Timor showed off some locally-made parts, they are still a long way from being independent of their Korean partners, Kia Motors. And their market share domestically is current hovering around only 7 per cent. It could be some time before Timor Putra takes its place among the preferred cars in Indonesia. After all, Tommy Suharto still drives a Mercedes.
